Kiehl's Skin Care Review

I struggle with very problematic skin. I easily break out and have sensitive skin. I get dry spots but also very oily sections on my face, which can be difficult to fix/deal with. Because of this I am a huge believer in good skin care.

I think it is worth giving a quick mention to the brand Cetaphil which I use almost daily. I love their gentle skin cleanser because it is extremely gentle, has no scent and never leaves my skin feeling tight. However, I do also like to give my face a really deep wash once a day, just to make sure I have no makeup still on and to try and keep my acne under control.

I have recently not been very happy with my skin care regime so I decided to try a new brand. So naturally I researched basically every brand out there. And the brand I decided to try was Kiehl's and boy am I happy I did!

Kiehl's are an American based brand and they mostly use natural ingredients. I went up to a counter and explained my skin type and the lovely staff helped me out with some samples. They gave me enough to last me around a month so that I could really try out the products to see the effect that they would have on my skin. It is so important to acknowledge that everybody has different skin types and that finding the right skin care regime can take time but it is so beneficial for you in the long run.

This moth I have been using the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser, Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner and the Ultra Facial Cream.

I start by using the cleanser. This product is said to be a 'gentle liquid formula that cleanses without over-drying or stripping skin', and I have to agree. To use this I first splash some water on my face then work in the cleanser with my finger tips in an upward circular motion. Then I put some water on my fingers and work it deeper into my skin to really foam it up and try to dislodge any dirt. I love the foam this cleanser creates, it is really light and it feels great on the skin. To wash it off I use a warm face-washer/cloth then splash off any excess. I find my skin is slightly tight after I use this, but this is probably because I have sensitive skin. The result after using this is extremely clean skin! It is clear to see after using this that it cleanses really well, which is obviously what you want.

Next I apply the toner. I take a cotton pad and put a small amount of the toner on to it then apply it to my skin. I have never really used a toner in the past because I find my skin doesn't react well to them, I think probably they were just too strong for sensitive skin. But I really wanted to try and add this step into my daily routine. This toner is for normal-to-oily skin and works really well on me. Because it is alcohol free it is very gentle. It applies evenly over the skin and didn't irritate my skin at all.

Lastly I used the facial cream. This 'daily hydrator' is like a moisturiser however, it claims to last 24 hours and protect the skin from the weather. This product claims to have 'an ability to protect skin from cold temperatures' and I was attracted to this product because I get very dry skin in winter. The drop in temperature really affects my skin and I am left with hard to deal with dry patches. It is hard to say if it does truly last 24 hours because I wash my face morning and night but it definitely lasts all day which I think in itself is great. It has successfully fixed my dry skin, which makes me so happy. The first few times I used it my skin was slightly irritated and became red, but after using it for just under a month that has stopped and my skin is now extremely more hydrated and not just in patches but evenly over my face.

Overall, I love this regime and I think I will buy these products soon. They are gentle and have given me great results. I have noticed my acne is clearing up a lot and my skin is evenly hydrated, making it easier to apply makeup.

Have you guys tried Kiehl's product before and if so what do you think of them? Or do you have another brand you like to use?
I would love to know your thoughts before I go and purchase them :)

Holiday Reads

I love to read and I enjoy most genres. However, I am a sucker for an easy read. The kind of novel that you can completely immerse yourself in and get lost in for hours. There is nothing better than a good page turner to keep you entertained on break. These are my top four holiday reads.

We Were Liars (I couldn't photograph this book because a friend is borrowing it at the moment)
Firstly, let me say that I read this book in two days, it was completely griping. I was fascinated with the beautiful Sinclair family just like the onlookers mentioned in the book were. The beautiful Sinclair family are blonde, tall, and wealthy. Each summer they go away to an island owned by their grandfather and spend time together with their family. Cadence is the oldest of the cousins and the main focus of the book. There is an air of mystery around the family, and this is only furthered after Cadence's mysterious accident during summer 15. I would recommend this book to people who love a bit of mystery, complex relationships and first love.

How I Live Now
This is one of the first books that I really loved.
The young protagonist Daisy is sent away to live in England with her aunt and cousins after her father gets remarried. She arrives to find a peculiar family and peculiar way of life. She is taken away from urban New York and finds herself in the English Countryside. This book encompasses love, heartache, shock and struggles. I have read this book so many times that it is literally beginning to fall apart and I couldn't recommend it enough. I would recommend this book to people who love a story that really develops and involves the power of young people to overcome hardship. This book has also been adapted into a film and I would highly recommend the novel over the film.

The Fault In Our Stars
There has been SO MUCH hype around this novel. I think in a very simple way though it is worth the hype, in that this is a great piece of teen fiction writing. It deals with concepts such as love, friendship, heartbreak and illness in interesting and beautiful ways. I love this book mostly for the characters. I fell in love with each character and they really formed in my mind. This book is one that once you pick up you won't  be able to put down.

Never Let Me Go

I don't want to write too much about the plot of this book because I found reading this novel without much knowledge of what was to come made it an incredibly intriguing read.
Just to give you a very vague overview however, the main character Kathy narrates the novel as she explores her formative years at Hailsham, a school that is sheltered from the outside world. The novel is set in contemporary England however, it is a sort of alternate reality. This novel explores humanity in an interesting and beautiful way. It explores friendships, love and life in a way that I never had. I found this book incredibly moving and it is one I often return to.

Have you guys read any of these? If so what do you think of them?

Maybelline Must Haves

Maybelline is a great brand as it is affordable and they have some great products! Considering how reasonably priced these products are I think they're definitely worth a try. I love the packaging of Maybelline products and they are usually very user friendly. Here are my top three Maybelline products to date.

The Falsies Volum' Express
This is my top mascara at the moment. I absolutely love it. I find it gives great length and doesn't clump easily. This mascara lasts all day on me and doesn't irritate my eyes at all. The only downside to this mascara is that I find it isn't that easy to apply to the bottom lashes. I use a mascara with a smaller wand instead for the bottom lashes. But overall I do love this product, and I have repurchased this product twice now as I haven't found anything to match or better it yet.

Baby Lips
This lip balm is one that causes a bit of controversy in the beauty blogging community. Some people love it and some people hate it. I am a lover! I love the texture of this balm so much. It is quite velvety and sits evenly on my lips. I find it very hydrating and it keeps my lips plump and moisturised nicely. They have SPF 15 which is important and especially great for summer. I keep one of these in my bags at all times, it is definitely a must have item for me.

Color Tattoo
I love these 24 hour cream gel eyeshadows for many reasons. Firstly, they are just so simple and easy to apply! I often just use my finger and sweep the shadow over my lids, which gives a simple but beautiful look. You can really build these up as well. Sometimes I just apply a light coverage for an understated look, but I do also like a heavier more defined look sometimes. You can also use these as a base, and I find they don't crease on me. I have three shades; Bad to the Bronze, Inked Pink and Tough as Taupe. My favourite colour is without a doubt Bad to the Bronze as it super wearable and looks great with lots of different makeup looks.

'My Lips But Better' Lipstick

I love a good 'my lips but better' lipstick.
After I do all my makeup I find that my lips are looking a little dull and possibly covered in foundation. So I always apply some kind of lip product to bring colour back into my lips as the last step in my makeup routine. I do love a good pop of colour but sometimes something a little more natural is a better fit.

I often like using a natural lip colour for times when I have a dark smokey eye look or days when I want to look as natural as possible while still wearing makeup. I mostly wear this type of lip colour when going to Uni. I find it works really well on Uni days as it looks effortless and doesn't need retouching very often.

My favourite 'my lip but better' lipstick at the moment is the Lancome Colour Design lipstick in the shade Vintage Rose. It is great for people with pale skin. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this shade for people with darker skin tones. It has a slightly blue/purple tint, which looks better than it sounds!

Two other colours that I know people love for this look are the NARS Satin Lipsticks in Honolulu Honey and Cruising.

What is your favourite 'my lips but better' lipstick?

Something a little different: One Million Lovely Letters

This post is very different from what I usually write about, however I believe it is a story too important to go unacknowledged.

Today started like every other. I got up, made my breakfast, opened my computer and looked at the most recent uploads to YouTube in my subscription box. This is a daily ritual that is finely honed. There waiting for me and my cup of coffee is usually a 'get ready with me' video or a vlog, but today there was something different.
The brilliant Carrie Hope Fletcher from It's Way Past My Bedtime on YouTube uploaded a video about a woman named Jodi Ann Bickley.

Jodi Ann Bickley at 22 became seriously ill with a brain infection. In a time of what to me is only unimaginable grief and pain, she thought of others, others who might be struggling, and needed support. Jodi set up a website called One Million Lovely Letters, asking people to write to her with what they were struggling with, and in turn she would write back. This project has now grown immensely and Jodi is receiving letters from all over the world from every kind of person.

I am implore you to watch this Ted Talk. For me it was heartbreaking to acknowledge fully that everyone goes through such dark periods in their lives but it was so inspiring to hear how Jodi has decided to try and help. Everyone goes through struggles whether it is loss, feeling alone, feeling left behind or illness. This is an amazing project and story, so I wanted to share it with you.

What do you guys think about this project? I would love to know :)

Empties Review

I love reading empties reviews as you know the product has been well tested.
These are four of my recent products that I have finished.
Some I have loved and repurchased, others I was disappointed with and they will not be making a reappearance in my shopping bag.

Rejuvenate Intensive Body Balm by Aesop
I have this balm in the scent tangerine rind, vanille and sandalwood and it is by far one of my favourite products on the planet *slightly dramatic *. I apply this to any dry spots I have on my body and they are dramatically improved if not gone. The scent is so warm and applies evenly without leaving an oily residue, which I love. I especially love using this on my elbows because they can get very dry. The packaging is not perfect. It looks and feels great however I find this sort of packaging often gets rips in it. It is quite pricey and my wallet did cry a little when I purchased it, but it has really done wonders for my skin.
I will definitely repurchase the intensive body balm again, but I might see what other scents are available.

Head Remedy Dandruff Shampoo by KMS California
This products claims to eliminate flakes and provide soothing relief to itchy scalp and I think it does do this. This shampoo doesn't strip the hair leaving it dry, like some other dandruff shampoos have. It leaves my hair glossy and overall I do really like this shampoo.
I have repurchased this shampoo, however I would like to try a new one soon. Any suggestion?

My Coconut Island Bath and Shower Gel by Treacle Moon
What I loved most about this product was its consistency.  It glides really well over the skin and you can really lather it up if you want to. The aroma is really nice but I would say if you don't like really sweet products then maybe try a different scent. The only weakness I found with this product was that when I used it in the bath it did slightly dry out my skin however, it did create lovely luxurious bubbles.
I won't be repurchasing this, mostly because there are so many other body washes I want to try.

Paw Paw Balm by Natures Care
This product was recommended to me by a friend but sadly I was very disappointed. I did not like this product at all. It claims to naturally relieve dry skin, moisturise, soothe and protect. I found on my skin type it did not achieve this. It was very oily and didn't sink into the skin well. On my lips it did nourish them but for a very short time, after which they became even dryer. On my skin I found it left a really oily residue and slid off my skin rather than sinking in.
Needless to say I will not be repurchasing this product any time soon.

Do you guys like reading empties reviews as much as I do? Let me know!

Saturday Happenings

I think exploring the city you live in is highly underrated. I love taking days off to explore Melbourne, and today I took a little trip around the city.

The National Gallery of Victoria was my first stop. There are always incredible exhibitions at the NGV and today was no exception. My favourite of the day would have to be the David McDiarmid exhibition. His work is powerful and extremely moving. It is bright, full of life experiences and exciting times, but underneath is a kind of sadness. The art is charming, funny and thought provoking. McDiarmid's work covers everything from popular culture to gay liberation.

For lunch we went to Wagamamas. I always love this place for cheap, quick Japanese food. I am a huge fan of a bento box and a juices.  I got the chicken katsu curry bento box with the apple, mint and lime juice. The vibe is always relaxed at Wagamas and it is especially great when you don't have much time to eat. Having a break and a bite to eat was a great chance to people watch and take a breather in between the gallery and our next stops, Alpha 60 and Robb & Lulu.

Alpha 60 first caught my eye when I attended a Melbourne Fashion Week show. The styles and designs are unique and absolutely Melbourne. I have always loved their tops especially as they sit really well on me. Their clothes are effortlessly stylish and chic.  I was lucky enough to pick up this gorgeous dress. It is a summer item however, I think I can definitely wear it in winter with a jumper. I also couldn't help myself and got a cute pair of their silver socks that were displayed at the counter.

Robb & Lulu is another Australian brand and is mostly known for their swimwear. However, I am completely in love with the lingerie they are doing at the  moment. The hand drawn designs are pure art and the fabrics are incredibly soft making these pieces perfection. This style of underwear and the fabrics used are really comfortable to wear, which is a must for me. Definitely worth a look.
